It always takes time to build a great internet product. Even Google when they came up, they took time to get where they are now. Post dot-com bust, internet startups have made a killing in terms of the valuation game. Many companies IMO made mediocre products but still got the attention (which they don't actually deserve). I guess Twitter falls into the same light since its been more than 3 years and still no fixed revenue model except for biting Google & Microsoft back-door search game. But lets face it, Twitter search itself is broken which can anyway be very well understood from their recent trending topics. Peace! True.
