If you are interested in local business listings, then have a look at Brownbook.net. I believe it's the only local directory that is also global as it includes 240 countries. So far, it's only been marketed in the US, UK, Canada and Australia so it's something SMEs in India can really take advantage of. You can enhance your listing with rich media all for free, and its listings perform really well in Google. http://www.brownbook.net

hi sampad

Interesting write up. I asa co founder of findnearyou.com have been fascinated with humungous potential of the local search market and firmaly believe that the actual success story page has not been written yet. When you abandon the luxury of global generic search -with smart or fancy algorithsm and drill down local the world as seen by alice is very different. Technology can access available outdated databases without proper indexing or mapping and produce uninteresting -sometimesuseful but mostly boring results. Local is a combination of people, time, location and interests and only hybrid models can survive the need for real time results

Very insightful article Sampad. While reading your article, I also went through Alootechie's article and found out rather interesting comments on them. May be you might want to check that out too.
