Since it’s the end of 2008, so I will roundup a list of top Twitter applications that I have found useful using, experimenting and evangelizing too. To take it further. I’ve tried to break down the list into Desktop Apps, Web Apps, Mobile Apps and Alert Apps.

Firstly, for those who are still new to this great service, twitter is an awesome social networking service which is being duly used by ~6 million people (aka Tweeps) around the world. It is being extensively used by many businesses too. Simply put, Twitter is a microblogging tool in 140 characters which allows you to keep up to date on what friends are doing, tell the world what’s up in your life and meet new people. The best part about twitter for me is its extendability feature which allows it to be used across most Web based platforms and mobile devices.

2. TwitterFox: TwitterFox is a Firefox extension that notifies you of your friends’ tweets (former name is TwitterNotifier). Twitterfox adds a tiny icon on the status bar that notifies you when your friends update their tweets. Also it has a small text input field to update your tweets. Twitterfox is a good Firefox add-on.

3. TweetDeck: TweetDeck is an Adobe AIR app which allows users to split their Twitter feed into topics and/or groups. Works on both Mac & PC. I think the best feature of this App is that it allows to sort out information from noise by creating groups. So be innovative and go ahead.

4. Shareaholic: Shareholic is for Firefox – easy and quick way to post URLs to Twitter from within your browser. Grand Prize winner of Extend Firefox 2, a Mozilla sponsored contest for the best Firefox addons. I use this extensively whenever I have less time to tweet. BTW it also allows you to post messages to 9 other services including Friendfeed.

I found this web app to be quite handy while I’m not using Desktop app. BTW I found the founder Colby Palmer quite helpful when I ranted about its failure sometime back. He immediately wrote me back and fixed up the technical snag. +1 on that!

It helps to find and discover products, based upon the sentiments of millions of user reviews and blog discussions. But I believe we can do more than just that with Summize Search.Twitter. Primarily it can be used to see what is being said about you, to you but extendability of this tool is limitless.
